What are some primary types drug tests?
The six primary types of testing are listed below:
Pre-Employment Drug Tests are tests that are done as a condition for hiring. An applicant must pass the drug screen before they officially become an employee. Sometimes these tests are done prior to the offer. Other times they are done shortly after they begin working.
Post Accident Drug Tests are completed immediately after an on-the-job vehicular or non-vehicular accident.
For-Cause Drug Tests occur when a supervisor observes behaviors that may indicate drug use. These behaviors are predefined in the company drug-free workplace policy.
Fitness for Duty Drug Tests are tests that are done after a mandatory or voluntary leave of absence. An employee must pass the drug screen before they are officially able to return back to work. Follow-Up Drug Tests are used to monitor an employee after he or she has been found to use drugs and has been referred to an Employee Assistance Program.
Random Drug Tests are unannounced tests where employees are selected in a neutral fashion. Often, these tests include a group of employees such as drivers, operators of heavy equipment, a specific division, or the entire organization.
Why should you drug test?
Substance abuse is an enormous problem in the workplace. Consider the following key facts generated by the United States Department of Labor:
- Approximately 73% of all illegal drug users are employed either full or part-time.
- Nearly 14% of all employed workers are heavy drinkers.
- Over 60% of adults know people who have gone to work under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Drug using employees have a higher turnover ratio and absenteeism rate than their non-drug using counterparts. Specifically, drug-using employees are two times more likely to quit, three times more likely to get fired, 2.2 times more likely to request time off, 2.5 times more likely to have eight absences or more, and three times more likely to be late.
- Drug-using employees are also 3.6 times more likely to be involved in a workplace accident and five times more like to have a worker compensation claim.
- Approximately 75% of callers survey on a national cocaine helpline revealed report using drugs on the job and 64% admitted that it affected their job performance. Nearly 44% sold drugs to fellow employees and 18% stole from their coworkers to support their habit.
- There no question that substance abuse affects the workplace. It reduces the safety, morale, profits, and competitiveness. It is no wonder why so many companies are implementing drug-free workplace programs.
- Many managers believe that their organization is immune. Their employees are not drug users. The challenge is that drug users are forced to work for companies who do not have a drug free workplace program. If your company is one of the remaining organizations that does not have a drug-free workplace program, you more than likely have drug users working for you.
What is the typical drug testing program we offer?
